Preparing for Your Move...

Preparing for Your Move in MarylandIt is important to make a trip to your local US Post Office to pick up the Change of Address form. Once you filled out the form the Mail Carrier is immediately notified about the change, so your mail can be routed to the new address. Since this change form only notifies the post office, you will need to notify other people and companies directly.

Magazines include labels for your convenience to return with your change of address. Credit Card Companies and Lenders also have sections on your payment slips for you to notify them of your change of address.

It is up to you to notify people who do not send you mail on a regular basis of your move.

Tips To Help Make Your Move Easier...

Packing Tips:

  • Begin to collect boxes in all sizes from friends, neighbors and stores (FBH Club members receive FREE moving boxes and packing supplies as one of many value-added benefits of the voluntary membership).
  • Collect bubble wrap, plastic bags, newspapers, tissue paper, blankets, padding, and Styrofoam pellets to use to protect breakable items when packing.
  • Gather pens, packing tape, scissors, a tape measure, and twine and keep it in a box so that it is on hand when packing.
  • Always reinforce the bottom of boxes with extra tape for added strength.
  • To help when you unpack, label each box with the name of the room in your new home where the items will go.
  • Also list contents on the side of the box, as well as number the box.
  • Label boxes containing fragile items with large red lettering.
  • Place china in plastic bags and stack plates upright on their sides, not flat.
  • Pack electronics in their original boxes when possible.
  • Try and keep boxes to 50 pounds or less.
  • Pack heavy items in smaller boxes. Lighter items can be packed together into larger boxes.
  • Never move flammable, combustible corrosive, or explosive items such as paint, gasoline, and ammunition.
  • Pack a separate bag of personal items you'll need during the move in overnight bags. Keep it in an easy-to-find place when you pack.

General Moving Tips:

  • Plan and measure where furniture will be placed in your new home. It's helpful to draw a layout of your new home and sketch in the major furniture pieces.
  • Decide what to move and what not to move. You can move less items and earn some money thru Garage Sales or give items to charitable organizations in exchange and get donation receipts for tax purposes.
  • Disconnect and bundle cords on television and stereo components. Label cords with masking tape with the item and where to connect it.
  • To save time on moving day, move all boxes to one area on the main floor.
  • Keep your phone connected through moving day to stay in touch with friends, family, and the moving company.
